i'm sure it was an unidentifiable combination of many personality and upbringing factors that put me in line to eventually see behind the curtain. looking back, i know i always had a sense in the back of my mind that it could very well be wrong, but i kept it sufficiently repressed to the point of actually believing it, until my world view expanded to the point of being able to confront that my fears were true.

Was there anything different about you that helped you escape the WT?
by Giordano infor me i know it was because i was a reader.. i began reading books at the age of 13, this was in the 1950's.
because there were some serious family problems i had two escapes i could count on reading and associating with my friends at the kingdom hall.. as i devoured steinbeck, hemingway, wolf etc.
my world view expanded....it had to.

I would like it. Shocked would depend on who it is. some i wouldn't be surprised about, but it's still too much of a risk to just bring it up.
to those who have met ones they know are on here, without sharing too much identifying info: how have you done it??

JWs always deny the information control
by AuntBee inan active witness on fb just told me that they are taught to "always question what we are taught" and use not only the wt publications, but any research materials, and come to a conclusion about what they find!
this is not what i've heard from you guys!
does she go to some unusual-type kingdom hall, or is she mesing with my mind?.

the VAST majority of mentions about this from the WT source directly forbid, emphasize the dangers, or discourage reading anything religious from an outside source. this is certainly the prevalant message and it is strong and steady enough to keep most dubs away from researching anything. then they'll drop a most occasional "make sure of all things", so that when we say their information is controlled they can point to that and say "you see! we DO encourage people to verify what we teach!". additionally, to jw's "make sure of all things" means: "make sure of all things by using the latest WT publications."
btw auntbee, thanks for your supportive PM, and that's great that you want to keep that and use it!

Did you fake underlining the WT?
by shepherd ini read on another topic " i remember when i used to carry microphones years ago in the jw cult- only about 30 % had their wt's pre-studied, the rest just wing it i truly believe" and it reminded me that people will assume you are not familiar with the material if you have not underlined, and that there will always be those who observe the lack of ink and consider you must be unprepared (and so 'weaker' than them).. many times i used to fake prestudy just for that reason.
its easy to do, underline a random sentence or 2 in each paragraph or the sited scripture.
you can wizz through an entire article in 3 minutes....did anyone else do that?.

Even worse, when I did 'comment' (out of pressure by my wife), people told me "I enjoyed your comment". What did you enjoy? I just restated a sentence. I literally actually felt stupid commenting at meetings.
lol, this is so true!

yeah i did that from time to time. depends on which stage of my JW mentality i'm answering about. when i was the most in, i guess it was about, say.. 20% of the time underlined for real (correct part of the paragraph underlined, but never did any extra note writing), 20% of the time underlined for real until around halfway thru (either by running out of time or getting too bored with it), 10% of the time fake underlining (done when i had the intention of "studying" it but ran out of time, but still wanted to have the studied look), and 50% of the time just not done.
that was during the time i most believed studying it was the right thing to do. i think i always subconsiously felt that underlining words that match the question at the bottom of the page and calling it "studying" was a joke, and a slight at my intelligence. but i was also very aware of the spirituality gauge it represented at the k-hall, and that acted as a bit of a motivating force.

"They have people in China, don't worry"
by sabastious ini had an argument with my mother over the phone because she was trying to tell me that the witnesses preach the entire world.
i asked about china and it stumped her.
several days later we were talking (arguing) on the phone again and she told me that "she asked an elder and they said the reason that china is not in the annual report is because it's all underground there.".

i personally know of a few that are in or going to China as "needgreaters". it's very secretive and they can't even tell other witnesses what city they will be in.

welcome PTN
i have also been told "you think too much". in other words, youre better off not thinking, or, being a good JW = not using your brain.
